Concrete Compressive Strength Testing

Trusted Testing for Structural Integrity, Compliance & Performance

At Advantage Technical, we specialise in concrete compressive strength testing – a critical measure of your construction material’s ability to bear weight and maintain structural performance. Using UKAS-aligned methods and calibrated equipment, we test concrete cubes and cylinders to confirm that your concrete meets the required load-bearing capacity, ensuring project safety, compliance, and quality assurance.

Whether you’re working on residential, commercial, or infrastructure projects, knowing the compressive strength of your concrete is fundamental to preventing failure, avoiding costly delays, and satisfying regulatory bodies.

What is Concrete Compressive Strength?

Concrete compressive strength is the maximum load concrete can withstand per unit area, typically measured in Newtons per square millimetre (N/mm²). It is the most widely used performance indicator for hardened concrete and directly relates to the durability, serviceability, and safety of a structure.

Compressive strength is usually assessed by casting cubes or cylinders of fresh concrete, curing them under controlled conditions, and then crushing them in a compression machine after a set period, commonly at 7, 14, or 28 days.

Why is Testing Compressive Strength Important?

Failing to meet the target strength can result in:

  • Structural failure or instability
  • Expensive remedial work
  • Delays in the construction schedule
  • Insurance and warranty complications
  • Legal liability and reputational damage

Accurate compressive strength testing ensures:

  • Concrete meets design specifications
  • Structural integrity is verified
  • Compliance with BS EN 12390-3
  • Quality assurance under ISO 9001 or NHBC standards
  • Evidence for warranty or dispute resolution

Our Concrete Compressive Strength Testing Process

1. On-Site Sampling

Our team visits your site to collect fresh concrete samples during a pour. We:

  • Cast standard 100mm or 150mm cubes in moulds
  • Compact and level the concrete properly
  • Label and record all cube details (pour time, mix batch, etc.)
2. Controlled Curing

Cubes are transferred to a controlled curing facility or stored on-site in line with BS EN 12390-2. This ensures consistency in strength development.

We test cubes at various intervals, typically:

  • 7 days – to check early strength
  • 14 days – for monitoring
  • 28 days – for final strength compliance
3. Laboratory Testing

Cubes are crushed in a calibrated compression testing machine, following BS EN 12390-3 standards. The result is the load at failure, converted into N/mm².

4. Reporting & Certification

After testing, you’ll receive a detailed report containing:

  • Identification of samples
  • Test dates and procedures followed
  • Strength results (N/mm²)
  • Compliance notes
  • Recommendations if the result is outside expected tolerances

Reports are fully traceable and suitable for submission to clients, inspectors, insurers, or legal entities.

Who Needs Concrete Compressive Strength Testing?

Our services are essential for:

  • Housing developers
  • Civil engineers
  • Local authorities
  • Precast manufacturers
  • Structural contractors
